medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Brenda Cook asked me to add some pictures of places associated with, or sculpted images of, Abelard and Heloise, a task I was happy to perform. She gave me a rather detailed description of each one. In the middle of all this, Shutterfly, which had been in tinkering-with-website mode, decided to mess with collections in addition to private collections of individual albums. All my album cover photos were changed although S'fly promises they still have my choices and that problem will be fixed. In any case, as you saw with Rosemary's pictures, some of the descriptions were cut off in mid-sentence - unless I fixed that before posting. To avoid this problem, I kept Brenda's descriptions very brief but now include her own commentary on the pictures. I think they are a fine addition to "our" picture website and invite anyone else to send anything that might be of interest to the list.

List of Shutterfly Pictures (Brenda Cook)
1. Paris. Conciergerie. Salle des Armes. A pillar whose square capital is
carved with the story of Abelard and Heloise in four tableaux.
2. The Beginning: Abelard the Teacher; Heloise the Scholar.
3. The Affair: Abelard the Poet; Heloise the Mother-to-Be. (Note the
position of Heloise's hands - and the beaver running away.)
4. The Consequences: Abelard the Monk; Heloise the Nun. (That beaver is
still lurking there!)
5. The Correspondents: Abelard the Abbot; Heloise the Abbess.
6. Paris. Ile de la Cite. 9 Quai aux Fleurs claims to be the site of the
house where Abelard seduced Heloise.
7. Paris. Ile de la Cite. 9 Quai aux Fleurs has the following inscription:
ANCIENNE HABITATION D'HELOISE ET D'ABELARD 1118 REBATIE EN 1849. The date
has since been revised backwards to at least 1117, possibly earlier.
8. Paris. Ile de la Cite. 10 rue Chanoinesse. This house also claims to be
the site of the house where Abelard & Heloise lived and loved (probably
between 1114-1117). These two addresses are back to back so it is quite
possible that Canon Fulbert's prebendial house and garden occupied the
entire site.
9. Brittany. Nantes. Le Pallet. The footings of "Berengar's Tower".
Originally thought be from the 11th Century, recent carbon dating has put
this fortification back into the 10th century. Abelard was born here in
1179; his son Astralabe in 1116/7.
10. Argenteuil. Remains of the Abbey of Ste-Marie. Excavations of the crypt
of the abbey-church. Heloise may have walked here.
11. Argenteuil. Remains of the Abbey of Ste-Marie. Wall of the Chapter
House. Here the nuns would have discussed their impending expulsion.
12. Argenteuil. Remains of the Abbey of Ste-Marie. A window incorporated
into a more modern building. Nice to think it might have been the refectory
......
13. Argenteuil. Remains of the Abbey of Ste-Marie. The Chapel of St John the
Baptist, the abbess's private chapel. Heloise, as prioress, may have been
admitted to pray here.
14. Paris. St Denys. General view of the West Front.
15. Paris. St Denys. North door. Probably later than Abelard's day.
16. Paris. St Denys. Tympanum over north door showing martyrdom of Saint
Denis.
17. Brittany. Morbihan Peninsula. Benedictine Abbey of St Gildas de Rhuys.
Abelard was abbot here from c.1127 to c.1134. This apse may have been built
shortly after his time. It is now a nunnery dedicated to helping abused
women and children.
18. Paris. Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Tomb of Abelard and Heloise.
19. Paris. Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Tomb of Abelard and Heloise. Profile of
Abelard.
20. Paris. Pere Lachaise Cemetery. Tomb of Abelard and Heloise. Profile of
Heloise.
21. Switzerland. Fribourg. Cistercian Abbey of Hauterive (Alta Ripa)
surrounded by its high crags. Astralabe was abbot here, 1162/3-1164. It is
now the mother-house for Switzerland and parts of Germany.
22. Switzerland. Fribourg. Cistercian Abbey of Hauterive. The guest house
(right) and the original chapel (left). Astralabe would have known this.
23. Switzerland. Fribourg. Cistercian Abbey of Hauterive. The twelfth
century church. Astralabe is (probably) buried here beside the High Altar.
24. Full Circle. Bone fragments, given to George Sand by Alexandre Lenoir
and believed to be relics of Abelard and / or Heloise, now in the musum at
Le Pallet.
