As an update to the discussion on engagement, have a look at p. 28 of
this month's (August) Museums Journal. Quite a nice pithy article
about blogging and cultural institutions. In particular, a quote from
the head of the Guardian's blogging and interaction on p. 31:
"The focus on the individual's point of view can benefit
organisations, says Kevin Anderson, head of bloggin and interaction at
the Guardian. "People don't engage with institutions," he says.
"They engage with other people." And he warns: "Dry,
press-release-style posts are diametrically opposed to blogging. The
benefit is in putting out a human face and being less institutional.
THe biggest challenge is not that you will be overwhelmed by negative
comments, but that you will feel lonely."
Patrick Steel of the MA (are you on this list?) wrote the article -
hope it will widen the debate about the usefulness of blogs and how
they ought to be approached by cultural institutions.
Readers might also be interested that I finally persuaded the
institution I have just completed some work for to overcome their
image problem by blogging, with a personal touch. It is early days,
and it is difficult to break a habit that was formed when museums and
cultural institutions like this one were told to behave more like
businesses and present a corporate, 'spun' front:
