Subject: FAO Stuart Gilkes: Re: Procedure for removing a student from
placement
Dear All,
Our approach at UEA depends on whether the placement is a requirement of
a professional and/or statutory body (eg NMC, HPC, GMC).
If there is PSB involvement, we use our professional misconduct and/or
unsuitability procedures (PMU) in the event of any untoward
behaviour/incidents whilst on placement. This allows us immediately to
suspend the student from placement (though not necessarily the academic
part of their course of study) whilst an investigation is conducted.
This may result in referral to the PMU Committee. This Committee has the
power to exclude from the University. There is the possibility of appeal
to the PMU Appeals Committee. It is unlikely in such circumstances that
the student would be able to continue on any variant of the programme
but we may (depending on the outcome of the PMU) consider transfer to
another suitable programme within the University (with no PSB
involvement). If it is found that the student is not 'unfit' the
University would endeavour to find a suitable placement - perhaps
elsewhere or with other mentors - in order to complete the requirements.
Other students on standard academic courses who fail to meet the
progression requirements relevant to year or semester long placements
may be transferred to a three-year variant of the course, if one exists,
should they fail any reassessment set by the University to test learning
outcomes. Where there is no three-year variant and the student fails any
reassessment, we would not generally offer another placement but require
the student to withdraw or transfer. Occasionally, a concession may be
granted to repeat the placement, depending on extenuating circumstances.
In terms of warnings, our procedures allow for two Head of Schools
warnings, after which a decision may be taken to refer a student to the
Senate Discipline Committee. In serious cases, the University has the
power immediately to suspend or to refer direct to the Discipline
Committee. As mentioned above, this procedure would operate where there
is no PSB involvement; where there are PSB requirements, we would use
our PMU procedure.
Hope this is helpful.
Regards,
Alison Rhodes
