echoing amanda's argument. design theory is stated in language not in
material things. design theory is a disciplined way of talking about
design, which is discourse.
it might be worth pointing out that what this discussion group is doing is
trying to refine design discourse. design discourse is not idle talk. it is
a way of coordinating with others the realization of artifacts or
intervening into existing reality. discourses produce objects.
if terry says that idea of design as a discourse are irrelevant, a
fallacious diversion and not helpful.
why one would want to explore design discourse? because it highlights the
social/cultural/cooperative dimension of designing artifacts.

Dear Terry,
I don't think Jurgen said he wants to DEFINE design as discourse. Rather,
as Juris points out, it is useful to think about how the concept of design
might operate discursively.
Why would this not be helpful?
Regards,
Amanda

Dear Jurgen,
There are many situations and contexts in design theory and design research
in which the idea of design as a discourse are irrelevant, a fallacious
diversion and not helpful.
Why do you want to define design as discourse?
Best regards,
Terry
