medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
Thanks for the notes on saintly ownership of churches etc. My next query concerns
brotherhood books - volumes like the Reichenau Necrologium which recorded the names of
those to be prayed for, primarily the deceased of the monastery in question but also the
occasional others. My query concerns these others: is it known on what basis they were included?
Could, for example, every passing pilgrim have his/her name (and perhaps those of their families)
inscribed, and would there be a charge for this service? I´m thinking in this instance of ordinary
pilgrims who might stay at the monastic guest house, not high-ranking folks who could be counted
on to make a nice donation. Any thoughts on this subject, or better yet, references to texts describing
actual practices, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Meg
