> 2) Lazarus of Bethany
>In 1147 relics claimed to be L.'s (and said to have been translated from
Marseille) were placed in a shrine in the cathedral dedicated to him at Autun
(Saône-et-Loire) in Burgundy. Herewith some illustrated sites on that well
known monument:

mmm.... that particular well known monument is, indeed, presently the
cathedral, but in 1147 was a collegial (or maybe even a collegiate) church,
then as now dedicated to St. Lazare.
the original cathedral survives only in some (late m.a.) ruins, just a short
distance to the east of the well known monument, which is somewhat peculiar in
that it is not "oriented," the well known main portal being on the north end
of the building, the choir on the south.
at least that's my best memory of how things were/are.
the c. 1147 monument was one of the very few suchlike, once-common ensembles
to have (almost) survived --destroyed in 1766, it consisted of a small replica
tomb structure and slightly smaller than life size statues of the Marys, and
has, i belive, been reconstructed from the elements found in excavations and
replaced on its (presumed) original site.
at least that's my best memory of how things were/are, based on my visit there
long, long ago, on a planet far, far away.
and of some shots of it i've seen somewhere on The Innernets but, of course,
can't find at present.
stylistically, the Lazarus monument is *much* more interesting to some jaded
tastes than the charming, but more than somewhat clumsy work of the more well
known other sculptor working previously on the site.
in particular, there is a wonderfully expressive quality in the figure of one
of the Maries, who holds her draped hand up to her grief-stricken face...
its an harbinger of both the dynamic final phase of Burgundian "Romanesque" at
Charlieu, Jonzy, etc. and the expressive "realism" found in the "Super Real"
Entombment sculptural tableaux of Burgundy and southern Champagne in the 15th
- 16th cc.
i have not seen this item
Matthieu Pinette, Le Tombeau De Saint Lazare Et La Sculpture Romane À Autun
Après Gislebertus. Autun, 1985.
which looks, from its title, to be interesting.
has anyone else?
