medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Doctissimi,
Having been cavorting for several weeks, I've had to skim through the stack of mail in my inbox.
RE: miniature statues. Indeed they are both pre- and post-medieval. One of the most notable in my home town is of the BVM and is called "Sweetheart." See: http://www.ursulineneworleans.org/content.cfm?id=387
for details. Unfortunately there is no image.
RE: relics. There is a logical explanation why several places may claim the "head" or other unique body part of So-and-so. A small fragment of the part apparently "counted" for our medieval friends. Or we could fall back on the "No you don't, we have it!" disputes, also rather common.
The desire for remains of famous dead people is apparently universal and insatiable. Folks digging up the bodies of the Bourbons for desecration (Hark, it's July 14th as I write...) nonetheless helped themselves to various souvenirs. And the unidentified locks of hair uncovered in my late grandaunt's possessions were numerous.
