medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I've periodically thought about getting the HBC. I guess this is the thing
I needed to persuade me I should get it.
I'm working on a dispute that broke out at the University of Oxford
sometime late in 1357. A Austin friar was condemned for saying, among other
things, that secular lords had the right to deprive ill-living churchmen of
the property of their livings. The university was unable to force him to
recant because he had the support of unspecified "great magnates" of the
kingdom. By June of 1358, the matter had been resolved; the friar was
condemned and forced to recant his propositions, so the magnates apparently
withdrew their support around then. I was hoping the Convocation fell late
in 1357, because there was a dispute about taxing the clergy, and the Crown
and the clergy finally compromised, with the clergy making some significant
concessions. I was thinking that the dispute at Oxford might have played a
role in getting the clergy to compromise at Convocation
