medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Diana,
(apologies for my sustained interest in the grammatical point, skip pls) ...
... yes, thank you for reminding me for these cases.
Having double-checked Smyth it says in
1947. that the 'intensive' perfect applies to particular verbs, like those 'expressing sustained sound, emotion etc' N/A IMHO to kekharitoomene,
1950. of course, but this is a point about style, in this case 'vivid style' which is N/A to our case
1951. speaks about subordinate clauses, but here we have a main clause.
Generally, I think, we can say that these exceptional cases are not meant for Gabriel's words. I seems to me the case that the words in Luke mean that Mary has found grace already, and these good tidings are what the angel communicates to her. I can see no room for 'intensity resulting from an action' or 'anticipation of something future.'
The koine of the NT is rarely reverting to such niceties of higher style, anyway, but this is a moot point.
Best,
George

That depends: it is probably incorrect in this case. The perfect
participle can mean a continuous state resulting form a past action, and
it may anticipate an action not yet done. [Resident professor of Greek
& Smythe #s1947, 1950, 1951.]
