It so happens I am to be interviewed on stigmatics next week and it may be
advantageous to read Warr's paper. Does someone have an email address for
her?

Cordelia Warr gave an interesting paper on Dominican promotion of
stigmatist saints, at the "Saints between Manuscript and Print" conference
at the American Academy in Rome in June.
As I recall, she mentioned that "stigmata" was often used to
describe a variety of physical experiences, not just the receiving of the
wounds of Christ in the manner of Francis.

Also Franciscans resented any claim Catherine of Siena received
stigmata. Carolyn Muessig gave a very interesting paper on this at the
meeting of the Renaissance Society of America this past spring.

wrote about Dominican resentment of Franciscan claims of Francis' stigamata.
They thought this was making him too much like Christ, and some images of
Francis bearing the stigmata were defaced. See André Vauchez, "Les
stigmates de saint François et leurs détracteurs dans les derniers siècles
du moyen âge," Mélanges d'archaeologie et d'histoire, 1968, 596-625.

Detractors," Greyfriars Review 13 (1999).

> André Vauchez wrote an essay on Jacopo da Voragine and whether
Saints Dominic, Peter Martyr, Francis and Elizabeth of Hungary belonged to
the original corpus of the Legenda Aurea or not, and therein also wrote a
little about Jacopo's sermons on Francis. The essay is 'Jacopo da Voragine e
i santi del XIII secolo' in Ordini mendicanti e società italiana XIII-XV
secolo (Milan: Mondadori, 1990), pp.92-115. The essay was originally
published in Jacopo da Voragine. Atti del I Convegno di studi indetto dal
Centro studi Jacopo da Voragine (Varazze, 13-14 aprile 1985), ed. G. Farris
and T.B. Delfino (Varazze, 1987), pp.53-77.
> On p.113, n., of the Mondadori edition, Vauchez cites Jacopo's
sermons on St. Francis, as sermones I and II, in R. Clutius, Jacobi de
Voragine sermones aurei, vol.II, Mayence 1616.
