The most likely cause of this is because IVA achievements are reported as the total mark of the 2 grades, rather than reporting each grade separately (ie 20 marks rather than 12 & 8 marks).
This means that in cases such as this where the total mark divides into 1 merit & 1 distinction, as Edexcel can't determine which grade relates to which unit, they show the lower grade for both units. Edexcel's records will show the correct points achievement, however, so this shouldn't affect the student's overall grade.

Subject: BTEC Query
Can anyone help me with a BTEC query, I cannot get an answer from EDEXCEL and I am having to wait for BTEC to get back to me within 3 days!
With reference to the old National Diploma in Uniformed Services specification, I have a student who was given 20 marks on the IVA centre point sheet, the tutor believes this should give her a distinction for one unit and a merit for another, however on her notification of performance each of the two units are showing as a merit.
Does anyone have any idea what the reason for this could be?
