London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine
Health Services Research Unit
Department of Public Health and Policy
Senior Lecturer in Health Services Research
The Department of Health has announced that it will publish outcome indicators for all patients undergoing surgery at NHS hospitals in England. This is the first time anywhere in the world that patients will be given an opportunity to choose the hospital where they can expect the best outcomes. Also, hospitals may be paid more if patients report better outcomes and experiences. These initiatives are hotly debated. An important question is whether the available outcome indicators are robust enough to guide the performance management of hospitals and surgeons in the NHS.
We are seeking an experienced senior health services researcher who can contribute to this exciting debate. You should have a strong interest in performance indicators and health outcomes reported by patients and clinicians.
You will be involved in a wide range of studies across the breadth of surgical practice. This will allow you to develop a programme of methodological research in areas including outcomes reported by patients, risk adjustment, continuous outcome monitoring, and value of administrative databases.
The post will be based in the Clinical Effectiveness Unit, a collaboration between the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and The Royal College of Surgeons of England. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team of researchers and clinicians who play a leading role both nationally and internationally in shaping and guiding large-scale evaluations of healthcare performance.
The ideal applicant will have extensive experience with the application of advanced quantitative methods in health services research. Abilities to manage large-scale research projects and liaise successfully with clinicians are also required.
The post is offered full-time for 5 years. The salary will be on the Senior Lecturer scale (£47,366 - £54,386per annum inclusive), depending on qualifications and experience.
For further particulars and an application form, please contact The Personnel Office, LSHTM, (telephone 020 7927 2203 (24 hour answer phone) or e-mail [log in to unmask]), quoting reference JVM9. Only applications in the format outlined in the recruitment pack will be considered.
Closing date for applications is 23 July 2008.
