Dear Colleagues,
We have been conducting a survey of leading journals for the design research community that now has over 200 responses.
At the request of Prof. Vesna Popovic of Queensland University of Technology, we are keeping the survey open for replies through Monday, July 21. This extension allows people who have been at the Design Research Society 2008 conference in Sheffield to respond.
The purpose of this survey is to gather a list of journals used in design and design research. Our plan is simply to rank order titles by number of occurences to derive a list of journals that constitute the top 5% of mentions, the next 15%, the next 20%, and the remaining 60%.
This will permit us to respond to the journal ranking proposal of the Australian Research Council that has been developed without reference to the fields of design and design research.
We will replicate and extend this survey later in the year. I'll be working with Dr. Jeremy Yuille of RMIT, Dr. Deirdre Barron and Dr. Gavin Melles at Swinburne, Ms. Tania Ivanka of RMIT, as well as colleagues from other schools. That project will give deeper and better consideration to methodological issues. This current survey is a rapid response to meet the deadline established by the ARC.
While some argue that journal rankings are not useful or valid, but we do not have a choice on whether to use journal rankings. Australia is moving from the former Research Quality Framework to a metric system that includes journal rankings. Since design faculties have the right to respond to the proposed journal ranking scheme, we must do our best within the policy framework set down by the government.
The best way to do this is to list the journal titles that the international field of design research uses and reads.
The more replies we have, the better our response
