medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Maddy,
As far as momentary "cures" associated with the Virgin Mary are concerned, perhaps the
most famous and most prevalent during the late Middle Ages were momentary resuscitations
of still born babies, who Mary apparently brought back just long enough for them to be
baptized. That saved them from eternity in limbo and suggests a relation to your supposition
that the dead (and dumb) were cured just long enough to repent of their sins, thus assuring
their post mortem bliss.
Cheers,
Jim
