medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
It's more complicated than that, although I left out the 'in' between
nowadays and Belgium. Apologies for that. This country has now Eastern and
Western Flanders as provinces, but in practice all Dutch (or flemish)
speaking Belgium is called Flanders now. Even such provinces as Belgian or
South Brabant (including Brussels) and Belgian Limburg. What's now called
Zeeuws Vlaanderen used to be part of the county of Flanders, but is now part
of the province of Zeeland in Nederland. The Flemish speaking part of
northwestern France used to be part of Flanders as well. The other provinces
are technically Walloon, but there are pockets of 'other' speaking villages
in the neighbouring provinces along the language barrier.
I know, even the Belgians are sometimes unsure about what is what,..
Henk
But "Flanders" is not synonymous with "Belgium". The County of Flanders was
spread across what is now France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
