To Bruce,
To my students, I present the field of design
as either a semiotic polysystemic field or-
an another pespective- as a political polysystemic field.
In the first case, going through the field of design
through its various discipliones and on the basis of the "Object"
- a basic concept needed to present, introduce, analyse, understand---
the field of design, I also and most certainly use 3 basis texts:
One--- the"Ferdinand de Saussure (1966) Course in General Linguistics, trans
W. Baskin. New York: McGraw-Hill. page 74) "- you refered to.
Three--- Jacques Lacan. ---but not :Le Seminaire. livre III. Les Psychoses 1955-1956
Editions du Seuil. Paris VI. pp 296-297----instead= The Four Fundamental Principles of Psychoanalysis,
and Two----Roland Barthes : Mythologies
In that order- one, two, three- so as to show
that
after Saussure's definition of the concept of "sign"
comes Barthes with his sign-cultural-added-values
and then Lacan with his signifier and the dismissal of the sign.
and that
Saussure's definition of the concept of "sign" leads to the def. of the first system
Barthes with his sign-cultural-added-values leads to the def. of the second system
Lacan with his signifier and the dismissal of the sign leads to the def. of the third system
of the semiotic polysystemic field of design.
Each semiotic system has its own types of "Objects" and "Designers".
