interesting list.
but i am not so sure what the criteria for inclusion was.
i am missing entries with scientific connotation like
research design,
survey design
interview design
experiment design
and other social uses, like
organizational design
office design
web design
you are right, the use of the word in designating what people do has been
increasing

about which there are many books written. our library lists 9951 volumes

Dan,

I'd be very interested in reading your recent mapping of contemporary
design. I'm not sure I would agree that the term 'design' is narrowing. I've
just done a search on UCAS (the University Careers Advice Service for
prospective students) for degree courses in the UK with the title 'design'
in them and found almost 200 (see below). Moreover, in my area of expertise,
Product Design, there are now 307 courses in the UK with 'Product Design'
somewhere in the title. I would say, in my opinion, that design is certainly
expanding but not necessarily in all the right places.

Best,

Paul

Dear list

There are always interesting discussions about the definitions of design on
this list, and I thought list members might be interested in my recent
mapping of contemporary design & consumerism. Outside of design education
institutes and design studios, the meaning of the term design seems to me
to be narrowing rather than expanding. Most recently, design seems to have
become associated ever more closely with art - or Design-Art
- as discussed by Alice Rawthorn in the IHT here. I think this pheonomenon
has serious implications for designers and the way design is perceived. I've
blogged it here as part of an ongoing series of essays about contemporary
design and consumerism, Signs of Design. Any comments or ideas from listees
most welcome.

Thanks
Dan Huppatz
