I think it's clear that there isn't. I would argue that the notion that "design" is a singular activity and distinct from other activities is flawed. You might better think of the word "design" as having several definitions that are related but not the same. Any attempt to impose an overall definition will be either so general as to be worthless (in that it make everything design) or exclusionary of many activities legitimately known as design.
