medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I bet Brenda Cook will remind us that Heloise (acc. to some) did not want
to marry Abelard for the same reason.

With pleasure. see "Historia Calamitatum" - Radice translation revised
Clanchy (ie Penguin 2003 edition) pages 13-16. Probably written c 1130-1133
& distributed in several copies to friends and patrons. I CAN dig out the
Monfrin edition line reference if anyone really wants me to!
And H is not far out! Her passage about the distractions caused by small
babies to academic study would, if slightly modernised, ring bells with a
lot of us! And (if Heloise did actually say this and Abelard is not making
it up) she said it only a matter of weeks after little Astralabe was born!
It sounds to me more like shocked experience than a conventional pose.
