Might the most sensitive maps be placed in locked cases? Several years ago
here, when a particular collection had to be under lock and key, our
maintenance staff found combination locks with very long hasps which could
be slipped over one set of vertical drawer handles on say a 5 drawer map
case. We now have another arrangement so these locks are no longer needed,
and the locks have long since disappeared!
Water, pure or not, will cause paper to warp. Unless I am misunderstanding
its suggested use?
If there are guards or staff at library entryways to check on items
approved for circulation, please train them as to what to look for vis a
vis maps. Guards usually know full well to look for the stamp on a book,
but maps....especially the ones folded into a backpack or briefcase...

Would "Smart Water" (a DNA labelled solution) be a possibility? As it is
nearly pure water, I guess it wouldn't affect paper too much.

Dear Ken
In common with many universities we are faced here in Southampton with ever
increasing demands on the space used to house our map collection.
A
decision has been made to move the maps from their location in the School
of Geography to an area within the main university library. The present
location affords some degree of security and supervision but the proposed
site is in a much more open access area, concerns have been raised
regarding the possibility of maps being stolen. Could I ask you to
circulate a request for information on how other institutions handle the
map security problem, is it by tagging or some other means? I would be most
grateful for any information on the subject.
Regards
John
