Dear Roger & Eric,

The filamentous internal structure of the seams - that led Hallbauer to propose hair-like algae that were able to trap gold either physically or chemically - is interpreted as open-space fibre growth in dilational fractures, some of which clearly cross-cut bedding.
Very interesting, thank you. Hallbauer had asked us to map the carbon
layer every day, they would excavate 50cm every night over a length of
20m, the research was done within the shaft pillar of the mine (which
is the cone-like zone around the shaft within which usually no
large-scale excavation work is done to keep the shaft safe). This way
we developed a 3D-block diagram. If the carbon layer cross-cuts
bedding I have not seen it. Also, this carbon layer was consistently
in the same position, and no such layers anywhere nearby up and down
the suite.

Look, I have no opinion in this. I took the samples, want to give them
into hands of someone who can appreciate their scientific value, and
that's it. If that is you, that's fine with me. After all, they offer
something that cannot be found in every quarry.
I have never worked on gold again since 1978. I did not even know that
Hallbauer's interpretation of the early 70s had been challenged. He
did SEM studies on the carbon layer, I think he had some biologists
involved as well. If H's opinion had been upheld, the carbon layer
would indicate land life in the Archaean. If not, the samples are
still interesting for people who study radiogenic polymerization,
which is perhaps just as exotic as Archean land life.
As a member of this list server, you surely are aware that I ride
another horse, namely deformation theory & continuum mechanics. I am
still waiting for people who are willing to develop an opinion on that
work.
