Pervasive computing (that which is built into the environment, or
invisible) gives rise to new forms of interaction which make some people
feel shy. Without a traditional monitor and keyboard to hide behind, we
may feel exposed, vulnerable and self-conscious about 'performing' in
social interaction. This project focuses on developing an awareness of
the situations which give rise to these feelings; how presentation and
feedback through the available technology can be mediated to manage
these issues; and how users can manage the connection between situation
and mediation. The project is formed from three parallel threads of
study, focusing on classrooms, social and situated groups, and public
interactive artworks. In each case the study will be inter-disciplinary,
combining the approaches and skills of three groups at Sussex:
sociologists, human-computer interaction (HCI) and software systems.
This study provides an opportunity for adventurous PhD projects in each
of these areas, supported by post-doctoral research fellows, existing
academics and other experts.
The Interact lab in the Department of Informatics will be examining how
computer user interfaces can be used to control and represent the "self"
in interaction, how a sense of safety and distance can be created where
needed, and how the social context of online communication is understood
in use. This group will lead the studies based on social and situation
group interactions.
