don't tell me what to do.
besides, at least *he* had an excuse.
>He is how I first learned about Chartres.
as did many others.
> And I married a man with a first edition,
ahhh... a Gold Digger.
>and whose uncle went into Chartres before the Germans had withdrawn, &
removed the bombs set under the cathedral,
sounds like a good movie.
too bad he missed those set down at the Porte Guillaume.

a Wonderful Thing, a good War.
>& who wrote a letter to the family telling about the great windows without
their glass,
there are some pics on the "Memoires" site of the Ministre de Kultur which
were taken when the glass was out --"revealing the Clarity of Thought of the
Architect" as one French art hysterian (Bony?) said.
>& exploring the carvings on the choir stalls.
don't think that there are any of these --the old stalls were trashed in the
18th c., when the 13th c. jubé was destroyed (fragments now visible in the
St. Piat chapel off the apse), replaced by the present ironwork gille, and a
sterile, neo-classical "veneer" was applied to the interior of the main arcade
of the choir.
your uncle-in-law probably was referring to the carvings of the "cloture du
choir," which date from the 16-17th cc.
btw, i have a friend in Chartres whose family had an american soldier billeted
with them (after the Bosche pissed in their well on their way out of town) --i
wonder, is the world small enough for that guy to have been your
uncle-in-law"?
the family lived on the rue du Faubourg Guillaume, about two blocks off the
left side of that second photo of the Porte above.
