medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
> There is little more to tell. We gave a copy of the letter to what we
hoped were the archives when we visited in a very cold October 1987.
Unbelievably cold. And windy.
i remember that winter well, coldest of the '80s --snow and ice.
thought that i was Back Home in Indianer.
i think that that was the winter when a bit of the north side of the roof was
blown off --i can't imagine how all the glass (esp. on that windward side)
survived at all, over centuries of that kind of abuse.
you'd think that a bird or three a century would have taken out most of them.
>The uncle's name was Stewart Leonard....I recall the letter described his
being taken from attic to attic across Chartres, by the résistance, before
getting to the cathedral.
yes, the resistance was quite strong, there (Jean Moulin and all).
>He heard the bridge blown up.
that was the excuse --that the Porte Guillaume was a "major" bridge across the
Eure.
as is clear from the photos i posted, one can just about jump across the river
at that point --though the rubble from the Porte surely blocked the street,
for a while. no doubt stopped The Big Red 1 right in its tracks.
(and destoyed the Café-Bar-Tabac in the base of one of the towers, which
belonged to the family who lived down the faubourg and housed your
uncle-in-law).
i wasn't aware that the cathedral was "mined," like the monuments of (i
believe) Paris were.
must have been some occupation commanders who got sent to the Eastern front by
Der Fuerher for not carrying out their orders.
