medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

looks like pretty good late 12th c. work, to me, both in figure style (which
isn't a provincial sequence i recognize, however [Southwest??]) and in the
composition (which is quite wonderfully complex and dynamic).
somewhat suspicious is the perhaps excessive harshness of the grisaille work;
and, even more so perhaps, the fact that there appears to be not a *single*
crack in any piece of glass --what are the chances of *that* being the case in
an 800 year old panel??
not good enough detail to really see if the lines of the faces are truly
expressive (i.e., middlevil) or possess that dry sterility which is so typical
of modren work.
the expressive face/raised hand of the female figure behind Adam is a very
nice touch.
colors are quite pleasant and saturated.
if it's a fake, it's a damned good one, not your usual 19th c. hackwork.

>> If you look at the latest entry in PECIA, showing the mediaeval goodies on
sale at the end of the month, you may agree with me that the fragment of
stained glass window illustrated is a depiction of the Harrowing of Hell.
Rather a nice one - I like the curved lines.
> Brenda,
> It is rather splendid. The question is: are there any 12th-century pieces
of glass in it (I have no idea why the site mentions the 15th century!). It
would have to be examined in person to tell, really. There were some very
good copies of 12th-century panels made in the late 19th century. We have
several in Canadian collections which were bought as medieval works, in fact.
Not all of them, by any means, were done as "fakes" either. Considerable
effort was
put into recovering the "secrets" of medieval stained glass in the 19th
century, and glaziers
felt it almost a challenge to create new works in a "correct" medieval manner.
The results,
though, however impressive, were until recently something of a nightmare for
museums and
collectors. Looking through the other material on offer at that same sale,
there look to be a
few other problematic works, as well.
