These neo-Germanist books published 2005 for a general audience in fact
achieved little scholarly traction. In 2006 Goffart did not need to refute
them in particular, because he had in press a great book, Barbarian Tides,
intended to level to the ground the whole edifice of the Germanist
catastrophe school of interpretation of the early middle ages. Goffart is
now revered as a sage by his peers (see for example Guy Halsall, Barbarian
Migrations in the Roman West 376-568, 2007, Acknowledgements, and Florin
Curta's review of Tides in Speculum) even when they cannot quite adopt all
of his extreme Romanist views, which include no urgeschichte, no Germans as
such before the ninth century, no migration age, no volkerwanderung, a
post-Roman west more Roman than the eastern empire, etc. Heather's main
argument about the crucial role of the Huns, already published before 2005,
got a cold shoulder from the profession. Perhaps there will always be a
Germanist school, but the refutations of the Romanists become ever more
persuasive.
