medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I'm trying to trace a statement in a medieval writer.
The medieval writer reports that when Titus took
Jerusalem many Jews were taken away as slaves to
produce quality cloth. The writer is dependent and
using Rufinus' Latin translation of Eusebius'
Ecclesiastical History, and Eusebius is citing
Josephus for much of the passage. The vast majority
of the discussion I'm looking is directly traceable to
this source: Josephus in Eusebius translated by
Rufinus. But I'm unable to locate a source for the
sentence regarding cloth making. I've checked
Orosius, Augustine, and a few other texts and sermons
(such as Gregory the Great Sermo 39) that deal with
the destruction of Jerusalem but have not found a
source yet. I'm hoping that someone here may have
encountered this somewhere.
