Dear Chris and Ken,
There seem to be several wires crossed.
I was following Fils suggestion for a repository for design overall rather
than a small registry just for DRS members. This larger vision also seems to
be the aim in Swinburne.
My concern is about acting against the potential integration of design
research across disciplines. DRS aspires to be about research in all areas
of design, which implies addressing this integration issue.
Currently there are deep divides between the engineering design fields, 'art
and design' design fields, and the new and up coming design fields outside
both.
Effort is needed to bridge these divides. A repository for all design
research could help. A repository could provide support for bringing
together work in the different design research fields. To do this, would
require a balance of research from all three of the above, in the
proportions in which they are found in the world.
My impression is the DRS has recently drifted away from design fields such
as engineering design, systems design and architecture and tended to focus
on 'art and design' design fields. The Council composition, recent balance
of papers in conferences, conference themes and articles in DRQ reflect
this. A DRS members only repository would currently be a repository heavily
skewed towards art and design - less than 10% of the design research field.
I'm interested in Ken and others' thoughts on these issues.
Best regards,
Terry

I think we have our wires a little crossed.
I am suggesting that the design research society could provide its members
with a place to deposit their publications. We have fewer members than most
universities have academics and not all would take up the opportunity but
some may not have any other opportunity.
