Recently we have fielded a number of questions about action research and design. I decided in the collaborative tradition of action research inquiry to set up a small archive of sources on 2collab.com http://www.2collab.com/group:action%20research%20and%20design (and made it publicly accessible). If you go there you will see some sources tagged - I'd appreciate if you find them useful for clarifying what design and AR might have in common that you post a comment on the sources and add your own sources(s) as a way of reinforcing one dimension of AR viz collaborative knowledge production.
