Bursaries for teaching, museum and outreach professionals

Saturday 5 July 2008 10.30-5pm, University of Oxford

Do you teach or communicate the history of science, technology or medicine to under-18s or the wider public? Do you want to know more about cutting-edge learning resources and techniques in the field? 

Then why not sign up for the Outreach Day at the international 3 Societies conference at Keble College, Oxford. Some special British Society for the History of Science bursaries are available, and you might be eligible for one.

OUTREACH DAY PROGRAMME

*The Two Debates*
A session at the Natural History Museum that uses the Huxley/Wilberforce debate held there in 1860 to help secondary school students understand how they can relate museum artefacts to the case for Darwinian evolution.

*Chlorine*
Former undergraduates at University College London and their teachers Hasok Chang & Catherine Jackson talk about their collaborative research recently published in An Element of Controversy: The Life of Chlorine in Science, Medicine, Technology and War (BSHS Monographs, 2007).

*The Business of Bodies*
A chance to participate in a role-play targeted at 11-16 year olds. Set in a courtroom, it explores medical grave-robbing in 1820's Liverpool - and the audience will play the jury given the task of deciding the fate of a recently-arrested individual.

*Objects and travel: hands-on public engagement* 
Handle and find out about historic instruments relating to travel held at Oxford's Museum of History of Science, and then learn how to use them for engaging museum visitors.

*Model-making as a pedagogical tool for schools* 
Explore model-making activities that draw on aspects of the history of scientific instruments. Come prepared to stick and paste!

The full day rate for the 3 Society conference (including lunch and refreshments) on 5th July is £95 or £65 (students). Further details about the conference (4-6 July 2008), including travel information, online registration, and draft programme are available at http://www.bshs.org.uk/

Bursaries for attendance at the Outreach Day on 5th July at the subsidized rate of only £10 are available by application to the Chair of the BSHS Outreach and Education Committee.
