medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
William of Champeaux is associated with both the cathedral school & St.
Victor from anything I have read about Abelard & his age.
Tom Izbicki
IIRC William of Champeaux (the scholasticus of Paris Cathedral) founded St
Victor (then just outside Paris) and retired there with a few fellow
scholars when Peter Abelard became too popular and poached all his students.
(c. 1114 ??) He remained there for some years probably planning to rest his
bones there and then somebody elected him a bishop so he went off to one of
the Chalons (C sur Seine ??? Marne ??? - I don't have the book to hand.)
But I think St Victor was always a very elitist place.
