medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
George, and others,
The question of whether you are a lawyer does not quite interest me; I'm more eager to know if you are a woodworker :-)
In any case, the design of the simple reading stand of which I sent a photograph (not the five-book stand), although inspired by one I saw in the Bodleian Library, is no copy. I sat down with only a vague memory of the bookstand several years later, and made my own design. There are not that many different ways to design a book stand, but I dare say that the ingenuous "swivel mechanism" (TM) to prop it up is entirely my invention. But I have not patented it. I will not sue if you copy this design.
Alternatively, I have the measurements all pretty worked out, and I've made a dozen or so already. I have it down to a routine. I can make these stands in a day (exclusing the gluing and finishing time). What's a reasonable price? I don't know. $75.00 ? $ 100.00 including shipping? Once the semester is over (let's say after Kalamazoo), I will happily make a few for interested members on this list.
Just let me know, whoever is interested.

Is there some sort of copyright or patent on these things?
If the design is "public domain" I don't think there would be a legal issue in anyone - say, myself - making and selling these. Bearing in mind I am no lawyer.
If there is an interest on this list, I could probably make some for members at a reasonable cost . . . although I think someone else has already offered this.
Not trying to compete, just offering.
