medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Diana,
I like your idea of the retractable brackets for book stands. That's easy to accomplish.
I still want to argue for a swivel book stand, that holds two at the time. I verified the picture of Christine de Pizan on the cover of the penguin translation of the City of Ladies. Christine has in her room a type of round table with various book on it. Under the table are a few shelves to store books. On it, in the middle, is a pole with a double book stand (the type sometimes seen in medieval choir stalls), which can revolve, so you can read two books at once.
Alternatively, take a look at Thomas Jefferson's bookstand, which allowed him to consult five books at once ...
Clearly, this is a further development of the Christine de Pizan bookstand.

I would like to have reading stands on brackets attached to the wall, so
I could have 3 or 4 at different heights, pull one out, push one back,
as I am working. These would go with the ideal desk, a 3/4 surround, in
a corner full of windows. So the supports maybe would have to be on
poles that stand at intervals along the far side of the desk. I also
want along the far edge of the work surface [which would be slightly
deeper than the length of my arm], a slanted shelf that could hold a lot
of spread-out papers, space underneath for more papers. I want
everything out & to hand when working. Ideally. I will be glad to
report back when finances allow the rebuilding of the back half of the
house to allow for this.
