medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Hi Pat,

He was an Abbé? I thought he was an aristocrat and soldier called Pierre de
Bourdeille.

gallants in question how she managed on horseback when
the court went hunting, and was informed that she wore
breeches of soft leather under her skirts.
I've read this one before and wondered, as I do now. What does she mean by
leather breeches? Were they the short underpants of the period,
traditionally called 'braies' or were they hose, chausses, long stockings?
The only other male pants were of the wide and padded type in French,
Spanish or even Venetian style. I'd go for the first but I've never heard of
leather underpants, they were only of linen. So were they special male
riding breeches? But that didn't make sense, because the real pants,
usulally called slops, were padded enough to not need underpants to prevent
chafing when riding. Which leaves special female leather breeches for riding
in. No examples of which have ever surfaced, to my knowledge.
Mind you: Brantôme has been called a liar before....
