Voice of the Listener & Viewer’s 17th Annual Scottish Conference
Thursday, 1st May 2008, 2pm
Scottish Storytelling Centre, 45 High Street, Edinburgh
in association with the Hansard Society Scotland, Napier University,
Stirling Media Research Institute and the Scottish Broadcasting Commission
Voice of the Listener & Viewer (VLV), welcomes the Chair of the Scottish
Broadcasting Commission, Blair Jenkins, as the keynote speaker at its 17th
annual conference in Scotland. Set up by Scotland’s First Minister, Alex
Salmond, to examine the current state of television production and
broadcasting in Scotland, with the aim of defining a strategic way forward
for the industry, the Commission will look at the economic, cultural and
democratic importance of broadcasting and the creative industries to
contemporary Scotland. The Commission is due to report in the summer of
2008.
Other key speakers include Professor Neil Blain from the University of
Stirling and Emma Megaughin, Programmes Coordinator, Hansard Society
Scotland.
In Session one, from 2 – 3.30pm: How is Devolution changing the Scottish
Broadcasting Scene: the Work of the Scottish Broadcasting Commission,
the speakers will be:
Blair Jenkins and Professor Neil Blair. The chair will be Jocelyn Hay CBE,
Chair and Founder of Voice of the Listener & Viewer (VLV).
Session one will examine the SBC’s work relating to democratic imperatives
for broadcasting and will tackle the following issues: devolution, which
has introduced new challenges for broadcasters in reporting news and
current affairs and created new demands from audiences in Scotland; the
relationships between democracy and broadcasting in Scotland, considering
what audiences in Scotland today are looking for in order to keep informed
and to take part in the democratic process.
In Session two, from 4.00- 5.30pm: Engaging young Voters in the Internet
Age
the speakers will include: Emma Megaughin, Programmes Coordinator, Hansard
Society Scotland and students from Napier and Stirling Universities.
Dr Matthew Hibberd, Department of Film, Media & Journalism, will be in the
chair.
The second session will be dedicated to young people and seek to
understand what young people want from broadcasters vis-à-vis news and
current affairs, and in order to be kept informed. What are the barriers
at present to young people not fully engaging in democratic life? Is the
idea of disengaged youth over emphasised? What’s missing from TV news for
younger audiences? How can broadcasters better serve Scotland’s devolved
settlement and work with organisations like the Hansard Society?
