3. REPORT: Moving Image Archiving and the Academy Symposium
MeCCSA Practice Section’s latest supported event was Moving Image Archiving
and the Academy, a one-day conference at the University of Leeds on March
15th. Organised by the Louis Le Prince Centre at the University’s
Institute of Communications, it was supported by both MeCCSA Practice
Section and the British Universities Film and Video Council (BUFVC).
A very successful event, well attended and with important contributions
from a variety of speakers on topics including legal deposit in France,
curating documentary histories and the potential for making publications
and documents available online. The two keynotes by Professors Emeriti
Nicholas Pronay and Charles Barr stimulated interesting discussion,
particularly around a call for a new kind of audio-visual archive (Pronay)
and the continuing need for Universities to collect and use appropriately
AV material (Barr). A report is currently being prepared and will be made
available online.
Delegates enjoyed the event (‘bloody brilliant’ is one direct quote), and
talks are now underway about another conference on how archive material is
used in teaching. Media archives and archive material is now firmly on the
conference agenda.

4. Journal of Media Practice 4th Annual Symposium – call for papers extended
Supported by the MeCCSA Practice Section
Call for Presentations and Papers
Media Practice and its field: The relationship with professional practice,
teaching and research
University of Leeds
Friday, 20th June 2008
The fourth JMP symposium will be convened at the University of Leeds
Institute of Communications on Friday 20th June 2008. The theme is our
context – how we interact with our field. This is about how we teach media
practice, how researchers and educators relate to professional and
conventional practice (and vice versa), and how our research by and through
practice relates to other research methods and activity in the same field.
A particular focus this year will be on postgraduate work, such as on media
practice in research awards or on training for teaching media practice.
Proposals for creative presentations, screenworks or extracts, posters,
handouts, performances, talks or traditional papers – anything that relates
to media practice as an academic subject – are welcome. There will be
opportunity for additional screenings or audio presentations as
appropriate. As previously, extracts and proceedings will be published and
participants invited to submit to both the JMP and ScreenWorks. The
organisers would like to receive proposals of up to 500 words plus other
artefacts or information as relevant, by Tuesday 6th May 2008.
Enquiries (including about available space and technical resources) and
proposals to:
