In addition to his vast influence in the UK and beyond, Malcolm Bowie was the
founding Director of the Institute of Romance Studies in 1989
and when the IRS merged with the IGS to become the IGRS in 2004, he was its first Chair of Advisory Council.
This two-day conference is a celebration of the work and interests of Malcolm Bowie in the multidisciplinary field of 19c
and 20c French studies. It includes sessions on 19c French poetry, Proust, literature & theory, music & the visual arts.
On the first evening there will be a vin d'honneur at the French Institute followed by a talk by Marina Warner.
