Geoffrey Walker Award Criteria
1. The Award shall be called the “Geoffrey Walker Award” in recognition of Dr Walker’s contribution to Clinical Biochemistry in the Yorkshire-Trent Region, and in particular to Staff training.
2. It shall normally be an annual Award of a complete bursary for attendance at a national or international meeting.
3. The committee shall review the value of the Award at appropriate levels.
4. An engraved award (initially a paperweight) shall be given in recognition of the winner’s achievement.
5. Unsuccessful applications who present a paper will receive a £50 book token.
6. An award may be withheld in any one year where there are insufficient applicants, or where it is deemed that there is not one of sufficient quality to win the award.
7. The Award shall be open to any Scientific or Medical Clinical Biochemist working within the Trent, Northern and Yorkshire Region at the time of her/his application for the Award and who is considered to be in active training.
8. Active training would usually be considered as working towards MRCPath and within 10 years of starting in the Profession, exceptions to this will be considered by the committee if the sponsoring department considers the person a trainee.
9. The Award shall be based on the presentation of the best paper at a specific meeting of the Region for the Award. The judging will be based on both content and presentation. Both Clinical and Basic Research will be equally acceptable, as long as they clearly enhance knowledge of the subject.
10. Judging will be undertaken by the Chairman, Secretary and Meetings Secretary of the Trent, Northern and Yorkshire Region, plus a Regional tutor and an external assessor from outside the Region. (Individuals will be excluded from judgements on specific presentations where a “personal interest” is involved).
11. In the event of there being too many applicants to be included within the set programme, those whose applications are received first will be given preference. The others will be considered for inclusion in the following year’s programme unless wished otherwise by the applicant (The “active training” rule will apply to the year of first application).
12. These rules may be amended by the committee of the Trent, Northern and Yorkshire Region as is deemed appropriate.
