This AHRC-funded research project has exposed an unexpectedly rich vein of
material relating to the Latin American art in the UK and suggests that
what previously appeared to be more or less isolated examples of interest
in the field are perhaps be better understood as part of a more sustained
and deep-rooted enthusiasm born of shared and often anti-hegemonic
concerns.
The project has focused on three main areas: artists from Latin America
practicing in the UK; exhibitions of historical, modern and contemporary
art from Latin America; and teaching, research and publications. The
symposium will address these areas and draw together some of the many
threads of the project.
The day ends, appropriately enough, with art by Jaime Gili and music by
Luzmira Zerpa, both Latin Americans resident in London.
