I agree with citing Burton as an Expressionist. Think of Christopher Walken's character , whose name is Max Schreck in, I believe, the second BATMAN film, an homage to the original NOSFERATU and very much in keeping with the rest of the film's highly theatrical feel. Another good example is the mid-nineties film DARK CITY, which harkens to THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI in mood, visuals, and theme of persecution. Kiefer Sutherland's character even bears a resemblance to the eponymous docator.
