Some of
> the brightest scholars in Paris, such as Abelard, taught under the

Abelard had left the Cathedral School at Paris Cathedral in 1118 following a
certain disagreeable encounter with a gelding tool. He then entered St Denis
as a monk, but in about 1122 founded the Paraclete in its first
manefestation as an oratory with attached male students where he taught.
This was disbanded in 1125/7 when Abelard goes to Brittany to become Abbot
of St Gildas de Rhuys. In 1129 he refounds the Paraclete as a nunnery with
Heloise as superior. Following assorted assassination attempts by the monks
of St G Abelard returns to St Genevieve, Paris as a teacher in c. 1133. He
remains there until 1140 or 41 when he is condemed for heresy at the Council
of Sens. See the chronological tables in CLANCHY: Abelard a mediaeval life
(1997) except that Constant Mews has redated Sens to 1141 (SPECULUM 77 2002
p 342-382)
Apart from the
