The Mechanics of Heavy-Duty Truck Systems
This year’s presentation of the UMTRI course on The Mechanics of Heavy-Duty Truck Systems will
take place 16-20 June on the campus of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The heavy-duty truck is a complex, pneumatic-tired vehicle requiring its own engineering tools,
analysis programs, parameter-measurement methods, and vehicle-testing procedures. With
increasing frequency, heavy-duty truck engineers are called upon to answer questions with respect
to highway safety, pavement loadings, and driver/vehicle compatibility.
The Heavy Duty-Truck Engineering program includes a tour of the UMTRI
<http://www.umtri.umich.edu/news.php> vehicle laboratory and a computer simulation session
introducing students to TruckSim, a comprehensive multi-body simulation-model by Mechanical
Simulation Corporation.
Instructors for the course are Bob Ervin, Paul Fancher, Tom Gillespie, Steve Karamihas, Dick Radlisnki
and Chris Winkler.
The course is administered by the University’s Center for Professional Development. For more
