Hi Ken, Keith and others
When I used to teach thesis writing at the School of Graduate Studies in Melbourne, the text that everyone (Phd Students from Humanities and Science disciplines) felt useful and I used as a basic text - and emanates from the Chicago School is Joseph William Style (http://www.press.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/hfs.cgi/00/7255.ctlhttp://www.j-bradford-delong.net/econ_articles/reviews/williams.html). this little text judiciously used focuses on linguistics constructions, including the passive, the use of metadiscourse, and other linguistic and rhetorical devices and their function in coherent and clear discourse. I would recommend anyone have this as a basic text combined with some others for all students.
