Hi Jurgen
I believe Design for New Media: Interaction Design for Multimedia and the Web
By Lon Barfield touches on this issue
Multimodal Discourse: The Modes and Media of Contemporary Communication by Kress and Van Leuwen also discuss the move form 2D to 3D and 4D and implications

I have an interesting discussion going on between various departments and I
was wondering whether somebody knows a great article/publication which
focuses on the difference between communication design and Digital Media
Design. We all know that there is a huge overlap and the problems at
Universities and Art Schools are always the resources etc: who gets the
students, ... which doesn't help at all. But the nomenclature and at the end
the semantics is the base of a lot of decisions we make. So a great article
in that regards would be a huge help.
