medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
At Chartres Cathedral, the Sainte-Chasse, the reliquary that contained the principal relic of
the church, the (supposed) Holy Tunic of the Virgin, was located above the high altar in the
sanctuary until the early 16th century, when it was moved into one of the locked chambers in
the newly built choir screen, only to come out for feast days and processions. Undoubtedly
this move was occasioned by security concerns, but it also had rather dramatic
consequences as far as the availability of the relic was concerned.
