medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
St. Rayner (Rainerius) of Pisa's lengthy twelfth-century Vita by his contemporary Benincasa (BHL 7084) includes an account of the saint's miraculous opening of a locked church in Pisa so that a woman could go in and pray. Edward Coleman (History, University College Dublin) gave a paper on saints of twelfth-century Cremona at Leeds some years ago in which he had another example (miracle in that instance operated by St. Albertus agricola?). It was probably not uncommon for monastic and collegiate churches to be closed to the public except during hours of service.
Best,
John Dillon
