medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
From: Tom Izbicki <[log in to unmask]>
> I believe that the size of a diocese like Lincoln made administration even
more difficult. That may be why new sees were created after the
Reformation. Thus Bristol & Gloucester, among others.
likewise, at the very end of the 17th c., Chartres (the largest diocese in
France) was pared down a bit with the "elevation" of Blois to episcopal status
(its diocese being also made up of parts of Bourges --another giant-- on the
south side of the Loire).
and, at some point round ces temps la, Paris was elevated to Provincial status
(and Versailles became a see).
unwieldy size might well have been a factor, but i would suggest that these
changes --even the Chartres/Bourges paring-- also reflected relative
post-middlevil demographic and administrative transformations in suchlike
places as the Loire valley and Versailles.
