medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I remember that well. Its one of my secret pleasures to see Cameron get his chops busted on stuff.
But that's a tale for another day. . . now a real question, although I think this relates more to antiquity than the Middle Ages:
Regarding the shroud - - -
The Gospel of John mentions the burial cloth being kind of in a pile, with the "head" wrapping folded neatly in the tomb. I will freely admit I've not yet
consulted either Ray Brown's scholarly tomes on the Gospel of John, or the Jerome Biblical Commentary to get any background on this (yes, I'm particularly
lazy on Easter Sunday). The question I have is how does that relate to the nature of the Turin shroud? I'm wondering how the various cloths would have
been used, and if - technically speaking - the Gospel account is reliable enough to serve as an indicator for the Turin shroud's lack of authenticity, or if
burial methods were such that the shroud could have been as described in John and still have the main cloth draped on the figure as seen in Turin?
If that's a coherent question. Its been a long weekend.
