medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
the Archives departémentales de l'Eure-et-Loir (Chartres) has put its
complete collection of Inventaires sommaires in .pdf files on line:
http://www.archives28.fr/ec/index2.php
the more recent volumes are little more than "short title catalogues" and are
only useful as such;
but the older ones --esp. those done by the erudite, long-serving archiviste
Lucien Merlet in the 2nd half of the 19th c.-- are wonderful mines of all
sorts of information, in some cases giving extended transcriptions of the more
interesting parts of documents (which, for Some of us are simply unreadable if
they date from c. 1350-1730).
browsing through a volume i'd never even looked at before (since the title put
me off somewhat)
INVENTAIRE-SOMMAIRE DES ARCHIVES DÉPARTEMENTALES
ANTERIEURES A 1790, REDIGE PAR M. L. MERLET, ARCHIVISTE HONORAIRE.
ET M. R. MERLET, ARCHIVISTE.
EURE-ET-LOIR. TOME SEPTIÈME. ARCHIVES ECCLESIASTIQUES. - SERIE G. II (Eglises
paroissiales et fabriques.)
CHARTRES, 1894.
i came across a laisse which contains a 1224 episcopal charter for the former
church of St. Maurice of Chartres and a 1457 inventory of the relics of the
church.
St. Maurice --just outside the walls of the city on the north side, destroyed
in the Wars of Religion, its site never excavated, to my knowledge-- was
(originally) a significant collegial church which was also a "rural" parish
church and has long been of interest to me because it apparently "belonged" to
the Vidames of Chartres and its rural parish extended all the way out to
Leves, where the important abbey of St. Mary of Josaphat was founded by bishop
Godfrey II c. 1118.
Merlet (L. or R., i can't tell) only mentions the subject of the 1224 charter,
but quotes extensively from the 1453 relic inventory --which latter is quite
rambling, containing an astonishing (to me) number of relics, some identified,
some apparently just stored annonymously, Higgly-Piggly in the "chapses" of
the church.
i have no way of knowing how unusual such an inventory --or the objects it
describes-- might be in the late m.a., but suspect that it is not at all.
the .pdfs are quite clean and clear and so the text can be marked and pasted
directly into WORD as a nearly perfectly OCRed text needing little correction
or massage.
i enclose the inventory below and would be interested in any stray comments
anyone might like to make.
