Local authors take centre stage at Haringey libraries' spring literary
festival
Leading local authors including Freya North and Romesh Gunesekera are
centre stage at Haringey Council library service first ever literary
festival, from 29 March to 10 April.
"Haringey Reads Haringey" is a fortnight of events in libraries across
the borough, from author talks to storytelling, writing classes and
literary walks, with a focus on local talent.
"We have fantastic literary talent in Haringey and I'm delighted that so
many authors are supporting our first ever literary festival," said Cllr
Dhiren Basu, Haringey cabinet member for leisure, culture and lifelong
learning.
"Our libraries are at the heart of our community, and this new festival
is part of our efforts to provide a wide range of cultural events and
activities for all. I hope as many people as possible will come along."
Festival highlights include Booker Prize shortlisted Romesh Gunesekera
talking at Hornsey library about his latest novel The Match, Freya North
on how to write a bestseller and Stephen Games leading a walk around
John Betjeman's Highgate.
Children's sessions feature Cheryl Moskowitz, Satoshi Kitamura, Tony
Dallas and more. There are Somali and Latin American storytelling and
Asian poetry evenings, and a Polish cultural event at Wood Green library
headlined by writer, performer and broadcaster Ania Dykczad and musician
Boguslaw Maslak.
Cinema historian Professor Ian Christie leads a walk around local film
and TV sites, historian, travel writer and China specialist John Man
talks about his new book The Great Wall and Andrew Martin speaks on
writers and their eccentricities.
Other writers include Paul Gilroy (Black Britain: A photographic
history); Charlotte Mendelson (When we were bad); Marie Phillips (Gods
